Blizzard Releases World of Warcraft Patch 3.1: Secrets of Ulduar

by Danny InternetsApril 14th, 2009 - 9:27 am

Today marks a rare occurrence in the history of World of Warcraft: the release of a content patch.

In keeping with their ridiculously slow update schedule, Blizzard’s patch 3.1: Secrets of Ulduar introduces new “free” content for the first time since the release of the Wrath of the Lich King patch (3.0) on 10/14/08, exactly 6 months ago. Is that new dungeon really worth $90 in subscription fees? Not to me. But, hey now, we can’t all come to our senses.

See below for a comprehensive listing of the 3.1.0 patch notes.

Secrets of Ulduar

Since discovering Ulduar in the Storm Peaks, adventurers have journeyed to the titan city to learn more about its mysterious past. Further exploration has revealed that the magnificent complex is above all a prison, intended to permanently confine the Old God of death, Yogg-Saron. This ancient horror has corrupted its guards, and now it is breaking through the last of its restraints. Faced with the peril of Yogg-Saron’s imminent freedom, a band of mortals has made preparations for a sweeping assault on the city. Overcoming the legions of iron minions and towering defenses at the city’s entrance will take tremendous strength, but even that great victory may not be enough to overcome the madness that dwells below.

Behind the Scenes at Bioware: Star Wars The Old Republic Video Documentary #2

    by Danny InternetsMarch 16th, 2009 - 11:14 am

For many rabidly overzealous loyal fans of massive multiplayer gaming, RPGs, or just a particular galaxy far, far away, news about Bioware’s upcoming MMO, Star Wars: The Old Republic, can’t come fast enough. While Bioware might not have much content to show off just yet, that hasnt’ stopped their PR team from compiling and releasing footage of the creation process and developer interviews in a series of behind-the-scenes video documentaries.

Over the weekend Bioware released the second installment in the series, which focuses on the company’s passion for story-telling. Executives and designers explain how narrative elements and setting can be used to create a more intimate experience rather than the more generic character development of the current and past generations of MMOs.

S-O-S! Mythic Closes 63 Warhammer Online Servers

    by Danny InternetsMarch 11th, 2009 - 2:18 pm

On Tuesday, Mythic finally closed down 63 of its low population servers after several weeks of offering free transfers to more densely populated communities. Those still left on the closed realms were forcibly removed and asked to select a destination server to be their new home.

While this comes as no surprise after a recent announcement that there are only 300,000 subscribers left in the world of WAR (down from 750,000 at launch), EA Mythic General Manager Mark Jacobs maintains that subscriptions have actually been on the rise lately, probably as a result of more aggressive marketing and incentive programs for recruiting friends:

Over the last few months we’ve been telling people to transfer off the lower population servers. Over this same amount of time people have been asking/telling/begging us to merge servers. So, now that almost all the people transferred off those servers, we’ve done just that. And of course, when we do that, some people here say “OMG Fail!”

As I’ve already said, if WAR was a PvE game, we wouldn’t have closed those servers but since WAR is RvR-centric, leaving those servers open with their current population would not be a good idea. While these servers have been low population for quite a while once we told people to transfer off of them their population dropped too low for an RvR-centric game.

Oh, and as an FYI, once again our number of paying subs in NA went up again yesterday as did our PCU (even with backing out the trial accounts). These are undeniable facts, not spin.
