Blizzard Releases World of Warcraft Patch 3.1: Secrets of Ulduar

by Danny InternetsApril 14th, 2009 - 9:27 am

Today marks a rare occurrence in the history of World of Warcraft: the release of a content patch.

In keeping with their ridiculously slow update schedule, Blizzard’s patch 3.1: Secrets of Ulduar introduces new “free” content for the first time since the release of the Wrath of the Lich King patch (3.0) on 10/14/08, exactly 6 months ago. Is that new dungeon really worth $90 in subscription fees? Not to me. But, hey now, we can’t all come to our senses.

See below for a comprehensive listing of the 3.1.0 patch notes.

Secrets of Ulduar

Since discovering Ulduar in the Storm Peaks, adventurers have journeyed to the titan city to learn more about its mysterious past. Further exploration has revealed that the magnificent complex is above all a prison, intended to permanently confine the Old God of death, Yogg-Saron. This ancient horror has corrupted its guards, and now it is breaking through the last of its restraints. Faced with the peril of Yogg-Saron’s imminent freedom, a band of mortals has made preparations for a sweeping assault on the city. Overcoming the legions of iron minions and towering defenses at the city’s entrance will take tremendous strength, but even that great victory may not be enough to overcome the madness that dwells below.

Dawn of War 2 Patch 1.2.1 Coming to a Computer Near You on 4/13/09

    by Danny InternetsApril 10th, 2009 - 10:35 am

Relic has announced that the next patch (1.2.1) for their best-selling real-time strategy title, Dawn of War 2, will be going live at noon on April 13th. In addition to tweaking game balance and squashing bugs, the update also brings an impressive new 6-player map for online play.

The upcoming patch was reportedly completed by Relic sometime in mid-to-late March, however has been stuck in the Games for Windows Live certification quagmire since at least March 25th as evidenced by a statement in which Relic developer Jager first mentioned that it was being reviewed by Microsoft on the game’s public forums. If the patch drops according to schedule on Monday this will mean that GFWL has added 20 days to the patch development cycle at bare minimum. Ouch.

Despite getting in bed with the devil, Relic continues to prove that they’ve been paying attention to the community. Patch 1.2.1 skillfully addresses the four most pressing issues facing the community at this time: (1) lack of multiplayer maps, (2) faction imbalances, (3) drop-hacking, and (4) matchmaking.

Dawn of War 2 Patch Finalized, Going Live Within 2 Weeks

    by Danny InternetsMarch 26th, 2009 - 12:57 pm

According to Jager, Relic Developer and forum liason, not just one but TWO new Dawn of War 2 patches are on the way:

Re: ETA on next big patch?

We have one patch that has already been finalized and is in cert, and then another bigger patch which will be finalized in a few weeks.

    Source

The first patch will presumably offer a formal fix to the population cap bug, for which a workaround was provided by Relic on March 10th with patch 1.1.3. Based on community opinion, possible balance changes will likely focus on toning down the Tyranids (particularly the Ravener hero) and increasing the competitiveness of the Eldar, who were severely nerfed during beta testing and in the zero-day patch.

Since the patch is already undergoing the certification process required by Games for Windows Live, it should only be 7-14 days before the update is ready to go live (assuming it meets MS standards).

Left 4 Dead Update 3/25/09: Survivor Melee Nerfage

    by Danny InternetsMarch 26th, 2009 - 11:15 am

Survivors get the smack-down with Valve’s most recent patch to its zompocalyptic first-person shooter, Left 4 Dead. Formerly spammable melee attacks by the survivor team now come with a short cooldown, which goes a long way towards addressing incessant whining concerns from the community:

    Game and client changes

    • Introduced fatigue to the melee attack in versus mode. You will see a HUD display when your melee swing is cooling down
    • Boomer vomit will now pass through common infected
    • Addressed some surround sound detection issues
    • Fixed a rare crash when exiting Left4Dead on Windows Vista
    • Fixed a case where the complete all expert campaigns achievement was not being rewarded

    Dedicated server changes

    • Corrected an issue where Windows based dedicated were sending spurious shutdown notifications to the master causing them to delist temporarily
    • Fixed dedicated servers not resetting the versus team swap correctly–you could join a dedicated server that had a previous game that was swapped and arrive on the other team than what was selected in the lobby
    • Renamed the tags for sv_search_key to use “key:” in the server tags instead of “sv_search_key.” This should help with issues of the 63 character limit of server tags
    • Fixed an occasional server crash related to voting

Dawn of War 2 Patch 1.1.3 Goes Live

    by Danny InternetsMarch 10th, 2009 - 2:52 pm

A new 150 mb update goes live for Relic’s Dawn of War 2 today. Patch 1.1.3 fixes the long-standing population cap bug…mostly anyway. Being the first of two updates, 1.1.3 is expected to eliminate the issue in most cases, however it is still possible to run up against the bug under certain circumstances, however it would require intentional exploitation. The second fix will be aimed at completely fixing the issue.

Oh, and those of you with high-end graphics cards should be able to select Ultra settings now. Rad.

Incoming! Dawn of War 2 Patch On the Way

    by Danny InternetsMarch 9th, 2009 - 9:23 am

This morning, Relic developers reported that a new Dawn of War 2 update has passed internal quality assurance checks and is moving to a closed beta testing phase:

Our data only fix for the population cap bug has passed our internal QA tests. The fix is now being tested in a closed beta, involving a larger test group that includes some players from our community. Once this test group has confirmed that our bug fixes are doing what they should, and not introducing new issues, we will call the patch complete and schedule a time to push the changes live.

Stay tuned for further updates on this next week.

The forthcoming update will address a long-standing source of ire in the DoW2 community: the population cap bug. Currently, a squad being fully reinforced after having taken casualties will have the last reinforced unit counted twice towards the population cap, resulting in hitting the cap before actually having 100 population worth of units.
