Sony Playstation 3 Firmware Update 2.7.0 Coming This Month

by Danny InternetsMarch 8th, 2009 - 9:55 pm

Playstation 3 firmware update 2.7.0Psyonix Studios developer Corey David let the cat out of the bag this week regarding upcoming Playstation 3 firmware update 2.7.0. In discussing a bug with the studio’s game, Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars, David let slip in a forum post that the update is scheduled for release later this month.

Hey Guys -

I’ve been working with Sony trying to reproduce and solve the PSN sign-out issues some of you report.

Any info you can generate will be really helpful. Sony mentioned a bug they fixed with the next system software update (2.70) that might resolve these issues, but we have to narrow it down and verify it’s the same problem to be sure it’s that and not something we need to fix on our end.

IIRC it will drop later this month. And contain lots of fun new fixes. I’m excited about this one, lots of new stuff. :)

Though, I dont think I can mention any of them just yet.

Real Life Mario Kart

by Danny InternetsMarch 5th, 2009 - 10:27 am

Who says the French don’t have a sense of humor?

Well, no one, I guess. But if they did, this would prove them wrong.

French funnyman Rémi Gaillard takes his high-speed go-kart on the streets of Montpellier for a real life simulation of the most popular racing game of all time. Watch as he tosses banana peels at passing vehicles and weaves in and out of traffic, all with the confident sense of self satisfaction that can only come by dressing up like an Italian plumber.

Seriously though, it’s pretty hilarious.

Don’t Hate the Slaya, Hate the Game: Can the Bitter Rivals Patch 1.2 Save Warhammer Online?

by Danny InternetsMarch 3rd, 2009 - 12:36 pm

Warhammer Online: Dwarf Slayer

On Wednesday, seven-years-in-the-making Darkfall Online proved that having the longest development cycle of any game in history is no substitute for competency. After perhaps the most inelegant launch in MMO history, the game’s shocking lack of polish, poor user interface, and frustrating combat system are already driving players away.

On Friday, Age of Conan game director Craig Morrison addressed concerns about the current status and future of the game. AoC has been reportedly hemorrhaging subscribers–so many that Funcom had to consolidate the game’s existing 49 servers into just 18. The company has been plagued with departures of top executives, including AoC’s original game director and Funcom’s chief financial officer. Worst of all, Funcom reported a $33.8 million net loss in 2008 despite having one of the top 10 best-selling PC titles. It is currently estimated that Age of Conan boasts under 100,000 active subscribers.

On Saturday, the universe of Tabula Rasa came to a spectacular conclusion as developers chose to mark the shut down of the failed MMO’s servers with a game-wide apocalyptic alien invasion. The end comes as no surprise; both players and industry professionals have been speculating on the game’s demise since the departure of its creator, Richard Garriot (AKA Lord British), in November.

Today, Mythic releases the Bitter Rivals patch 1.2 for Warhammer Online as the first installment of its Call to Arms “live expansion”. The update introduces two new melee classes classes (the Dwarf Slayer and the Orc Choppa), the Bitter Rivals live event, new items, career balancing, and over 500 bug fixes. Players participating in the live event will be the first to gain access to the new playable classes at its completion on March 10th; everyone else will have to wait until the 17th.

Games for Windows Live Receives Dawn of War 2 Update

by Danny InternetsMarch 2nd, 2009 - 2:21 pm

A patch for Games for Windows Live has hit the interweb today in an effort to improve multiplayer for Dawn of War 2, which depends on GFWL to match players for ranked games based on their rank and Trueskill rating. (In DoW2, rank is accumulated like experience and can only increase whereas Trueskill rating fluctuates based on your win/loss ratio).

The patch was announced in a post on the official Dawn of War 2 forums this morning:

A change is being made on Games for Windows – LIVE today to improve the Multiplayer experience for DoW2 players. Ranked and Custom game modes requiring Games for Windows – LIVE will now only match players using the latest version of the game. Players should see a higher percentage of compatible games in the custom games list and reduced search times during matchmaking. Players with an out of date version of DoW2 will need to connect to Steam in ‘online mode’ to download the latest patch.

Players choosing to remain in ‘off-line’ mode will continue to have access to off-line Campaign and LAN game modes without connecting to Games for Window – LIVE or Steam.

Relic Releases Large Dawn of War 2 Patch…By Accident?

by Danny InternetsFebruary 25th, 2009 - 1:31 pm

candyApril Fools came a few weeks early yesterday evening for Dawn of War 2 players greeted by a new 130 mb patch when connecting to Steam. Bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, the community lit up like a Christmas tree with curious speculation over what potential changes might be included with such a hefty update.

Unfortunately, it turns out the large patch was just a mistake. As Relic explains on the official forums, the fix was only intended to be 10 mb, but an error caused the update to redownload another 120 mb of redundant data, none of which is expected to impact game performance or stability of previously existing installations.

So what was the patch for? A simple fix for garbled text appearing in the “News” tab on the game’s main screen. Rad.

Minds Boggled: WoW 3.1.0 Patch Notes

by Danny InternetsFebruary 24th, 2009 - 10:24 am

wowBlizzard dumped World of Warcraft patch 3.1.0 on to the Player Test Realm (PTR) downloader early this morning, which was greeted with the usual full spectrum of forum fanfare: threats of canceling subscriptions, rapid fanboyism, skillful trolls, and a few lost souls who still haven’t caught on that World of Warcraft comes down for 4+ hours every Tuesday.

Also typical of Blizzard’s patch releases, most of the changes seem to have been made without any grounding in the current state of the game and its community. While I do not maintain an active subscription with WoW anymore, I still frequent a number of blogs and unofficial news outlets from the community in an attempt to stay informed of new developments. The nearly unanimous sentiment is that Hunter dominance is ruining competitive PvP. So what does Blizzard do to address this?

Why, buff Hunters, of course!

Dawn of War 2 Zero-Day Patch Update

by Danny InternetsFebruary 13th, 2009 - 12:47 pm

In its continuing dialogue with beta testers and fans, Relic has released a slew of information regarding the success of their open multiplayer beta for Dawn of War 2, balancing changes, new content, and the zero-day patch:

We would like to take this opportunity to talk a bit about the Beta and what’s in store next for DOW II. First off, the Beta has been really successful from our perspective. We have had over 250,000 unique players participate and have gathered an incredible amount of qualitative and quantitative data. Your bug reports, balance feedback and technical support assistance is going to go a long way to helping us support the DOW II community over the next few months. This support starts with our first major patch for the retail game which is currently in certification testing at Microsoft. If everything goes to plan, the patch should be available at launch or within a few days of the game shipping to stores.

Aside from adding two new maps (a 3v3 map and a 1v1 map), major gameplay elements being changed include rate of requisition acquisition (say that ten times fast) and suppression mechanics.

In the last major beta patch, requisition rates were increased dramatically in order to allow players to field more units, but most players rightly complained that it made the resource trivial in team matches where often there was more requisition gained that could even be spent. Patch 1.1.0 scales back these changes to a version more closely resembling the beta state pre-patch.

Suppression has been tweaked to make it less generally useful, but also less likely to be overwhelmed by massed ranged units or charging melee. Now, just as in Company of Heroes, taking cover will drastically reduce the damage taken by suppression weapons; likewise, picking up your head to fire some pot shots will make you especially vulnerable to catching a face full of hot lead (or lasersbeams). Furthermore, suppression weapons will be much more effective against closer units, which should help against charging Ripper Swarms, which currently allow the entire Tyranid army to circumvent an important and punishing game mechanic.

See below for the full patch notes:

PATCH NOTES 1.1.0 (2/19/09)

AUDIO

• Fixed a bug where Tyranid units were not “speaking.”
• Missing button audio added to Player Stats screen under Game History.
• Added a countdown sound to the post-game stats screen.

Dawn of War 2 Multiplayer Beta Patched - 2/5/09

by Danny InternetsFebruary 5th, 2009 - 7:49 pm

A major update to the Dawn of War 2 multiplayer beta has just hit Steam within the last few minutes, a good sign that the developers are keeping a close eye on progress and lending an ear to player feedback. The patch notes are extensive, consisting of a huge number of balance tweaks and new features. I’ve taken the liberty of bolding some of the more important changes.

For the TLDR crowd:

(1) Ranged weapons nerfed to make getting into melee a bit easier.

(2) Explosions now dynamically alter the battlefield by creating craters and debris which can be used by infantry as cover.

(3) Grenades and flamers are now more effective against enemies in cover (which is what they’re designed for).

(4) And woe are the Eldar–it is not a good day to be a space elf.

Patch notes - 2/5/09

Increased the chances for melee sync-kills to occur.
Fixed an issue with all units gaining experience from kills. Only units that fight will gain experience. Heroes will still gain experience just by being near the fighting.
All infantry weapon damage reduced by 15% with the exception of anti-vehicle, sniper and artillery weapons.
All heroes health reduced by 10% to reflect global damage change.
Some melee units reduced in health by 10%.
