When Bethesda announced the three DLC packs being offered for both the Xbox 360 and the PC, Fallout 3 enthusiasts squirmed with delight in the anticipation of three consecutive months of extra content. But with the release of Operation: Anchorage (or Operation: Disappointing) barely making its January release, its hard to believe that we’ll see the next two according to their projected release dates. Already being pushed back from February to early March, The Pitt, seems to be taking a very familiar shape, one I find myself much less excited for since the release of Anchorage.
Taking place in the remains of Pittsburgh, 300 some odd miles away from the Capital Wasteland, the Pitt will have the Lone Wanderer traveling by railway to either join, usurp, or infiltrate the ranks of raiders and slavers now posted in the steel yard ruins. Radiation has run rampant around the area, creating both ghouls (normal and feral) and super mutants, for three irradiated rivers converge around the town. The presence of super mutants makes one think of the F.E.V, or Forced Evolutionary Virus, and points to a possible Government conspiracy that extends from the Vault experiments.
First mentioned by Paladin Kodiak in the Citadel, after the Great War, Pittsburgh simply became a shithole (wait…thats no different than today). Rape gangs and torture squads were prevalent, encouraging Elder Owyn Lyons to purge the area during his initial recon of the Capital Wasteland and its surrounding areas. Known as “The Scourge,” Elder Lyons led his highly outnumbered squad of power armor clad Paladins over Mount Washington and decimated all that was wrought. As they sifted through the remains, the Brotherhood came upon 20 unmutated children, who where brought back to the Citadel and enlisted into the East Coast Brotherhood of Steel, Paladin Kodiak being one of them. Although the area hasn’t been as dangerous since, raiders and slavers continue to have a strong presence within the Pitt.
One interesting notion about Pittsburgh within the Fallout universe is that it was not hit directly by an atomic bomb. I had problems with the less than satisfactory landscape that was utilized in Anchorage. This adds a whole new feel to the post-apocalyptic world, and new is what all DLC, whether its Fallout or not, should hope to achieve for. As much as I loved Fallout 3, I don’t just want extended gameplay for my 10 bucks. I want new features, something similar to the Bloody Mess perk, which changed how the game operated. Why not a Limb Dismemberment perk? Or perks that offer more unique dialog options or, and this might just sound too fucking EXTREME, the addition of some sort of transportation, a motorcycle perhaps? Theres absolutely no way that every viable form of transportation was destroyed by the nuclear fallout. I’d be happy with a goddamn tricycle at this point.
All in all, The Pitt seems to be shaping up quite…well, lets just say it’s shaping up and, like Anchorage, “promises to offer” five hours of gameplay. With its release still over a month away, details have slowly been trickling out, but nothing about added weapons, armor, or perks has been discussed, and I’m sure we won’t hear anything concrete for another couple of weeks. Its interesting that the announcement of the delay came very shortly after the lackluster reviews and impressions that Operation: Anchorage received. Now, what this means, no one can be quite sure. Was it so riddled with bugs and other problems that it needed more polish? Or is Bethesda uping their designing game and going to revel us with sheer awesomeness? I’m putting my money on the former.

Yeah, a shithole, that’s why it’s been the voted the most livable city in America, right? And its confirmed that the whole Vault program was a conspiracy. Do some of your research before you make comments.

Yeah, no shit “beornwolf” that the Vaults were a conspiracy. If you actually knew how to READ, you’d have seen that I said the FEV in the rivers is a government conspiracy that EXTENDS from the Vault EXPERIMENTS. You see those two words? “Extends” and “Experiments?” So next time, before you flame my article for not having adequate “research,” you may want to learn how to read first. Oh yeah, Pittsburgh is still and will always be a shithole. Its home to the worst baseball playing Pirates ever.

So, this review isn’t bad… it is just not there as far as a professional review goes. Based on your comment about the Pirates being a crappy team, you make no scene when you become irate, which I think is a temper problem for you. I’m not from Pittsburgh and I will never probably live there, but what you say is in no relevance to the DLC at all. The point of Fallout is to consume the player in a “shit-hole” world. Operation: Anchorage was a disappointment to most because everyone rushed through it. It was built to be a little more fast paced anyway. I know you mentioned the bloody mess perk changing the game play itself and wished OA did something similar, but the did. They added health and ammo points, involved the player in combat scenarios, designed new templates, and had a decent backdrop story for OA. They also had to add a new physics template just for the Gauss rifle and create new skin templates for the Chimera Tank. As far as the Limb Dismemberment Perk, that would be a waste just because you already have bloody mess, and combined with a high melee skill, the VATS cinematics would already dismember anyway. Now, on to transportation. Stupid Stupid Stupid. They were able to do so with Oblivion because the draw distances were toned down. Since they up-ed the draw distance with Fallout 3, driving anything faster than running speed would cause the frame rate to crash below 40, which we can all agree is damn ugly. If you played Fallout Tactics you would remember there being 4 distinct vehicles that the squad could drive. While cool as a concept, think of how much time that would cost Bethesda in making a new control scheme, template design, draw distance mark-down, and even re-draws on 3rd person view because of being “in-cockpit”. Its too much and too costly for the systems to run. And think about it, you would have to drive and NOT be able to fire. Gayness to the max.
I understand you may be flustered by spending Ten dollars on DLC, but note that 30 hours of extra oblivion cost 30 dollars. It takes time, template space, and new voice overs for everything. And if you want to feel better, just compare OA to Knothole Island or Bringing Down the Sky in Mass Effect. Both of these, while great base games, did not have superb DLC, although Bioware did do a great job with theirs. Maybe this shed some light for you, maybe not. Maybe this got your balls in even more of a knot. I don’t know, and I almost don’t care. I just get tired of the same “Im a bitchy bratty gamer and i want my extras now and cheaper.”

@ Mel Inov
(1) It’s not a review, hence why it’s not in the reviews category.
(2) You might want to consider paragraphs–they tend to make rambling comments slightly more readable.
(3) This is a blog. If you don’t like the opinions then feel free not to read them.

The DLC is going to involve mroe of the Back sotry behind what happened. the Black Isles “Van Buren” though considered not canon was bought by Bethesda and ideas have brought over. Trogs, cave dwellers that are extremley hurt by sun light ( the citizens of rockopolis were these mutations) are in the new DLC. In a holotape in Rockopolis it says all the citizens were sold up in the Pitt. You can expect to see some refrance to the brotherhood due to Operation: Scourge. Talk to brother Kodiac in the citadel. It will be a traditional fallout 3 style quests, unlike the some what disappointing OA download. quests and situations where you can choose a good path or bad and do not have to do quest after quest confined to one area. This is all NEW Information just released so i thought i might enlighten it upon you to read about it and see the screenshots, how ever few that were just released.
P.S. when things are pushed back it is not always bad. maybe they are fixing all tyhos ebugs that people find wrong with everything, because of the failor of OA.
