Austin, Tx: Ground Zero for Zombie Epidemic

by Danny InternetsFebruary 4th, 2009 - 4:58 pm

On January 28th, Austin officially became ground zero for the impending zombie apocalypse…or so hackers would have drivers at the intersection of Lamar and Martin Luther King boulevards believe.

The programmable signs at the intersection are intended for informing drivers about traffic and construction, however on the morning of the 28th they carried a different, but arguably more important warning: “ZOMBIES IN AREA! RUN”. The signs were reportedly up for several hours before one of the contractors observed the altered signs on his morning commute and ordered them changed back to their intended messages.

These mischief-makers and raisers of public ire were apparently as industrious as they were hilarious–it was discovered that the hackers not only cracked the password encryption on the sign computers, but did so locally after cutting through the padlocks that blocked access.
