Fallout 3: Operation Anchorage

Developer: Bethesda Softworks
Release Date: Tuesday, 1/27/09

Bethesda Softworks is set to release its first addition to the critically acclaimed Fallout 3 in the form of a DLC package called Operation Anchorage. The announcement of the release date for Operation Anchorage came with a long-awaited patch for Fallout 3 (patch date 1/13/09).

Fallout 3: Operation Anchorage takes place in the post-apocalyptic setting of Alaska, which, in the game’s lore prior to the nuclear armageddon, had been invaded and occupied by communist China. In a Gamespy interview with Jeff Gardiner, DLC producer for Bethsoft, it was revealed that the expansion should take between 4 and 6 hours to complete and will consist of a mostly linear story, however will allow for free exploration by players similar to the original campaign.

At only $10 (or 800 Microsoft points on Xbox Live), it looks as though this miniature expansion won’t feature any vehicles, new creatures, UI features, level cap increase, or even new weapons, though it does have Chinese super ninjas, so I guess that’s something.

Dawn of War 2 Open Access Multiplayer Beta

Developer: Relic Entertainment
Release Date: Wednesday, 1/28/09

The Dawn of War 2 beta, first opened exclusively to Dawn of War: Soulstorm owners on January 21, is set to open to everyone else on January 28th. The beta is scheduled to be live for a grand total of four weeks, ending upon the release of the full game on February 19, 2009.Dawn of War 2 is a sequel to the successful and genre-changing real-time strategy game Dawn of War, developed by Relic Entertainment and published by THQ. The game features small-scale skirmishes between four different races based on the popular tabletop wargame Warhammer 40,000, produced by British hobby giant Games Workshop. The four races include the superhuman Space Marines, Eldar (mystic space elves), rampaging Orks, and the utterly alien and monstrous Tyranids.

While maintaining many RTS traditions, DoW2 breaks the mold by completely eliminating base building and by including a number of role-playing elements, such as upgradable and equipable hero characters that can single-handedly change the tide of battles. It places great emphasis on squad-level tactics, similar to what Relic did with Company of Heroes.

MLB Front Office Manager

Developer: 2K Sports
Release Date: Monday, 1/26/09

People still play sports games on the PC? The last time I played a baseball game on the PC was when people still knew who Tony LaRusa was.

In any event, another piece of software for people who don’t know any better is coming out this week. Slightly tweaked graphics, updated rosters, complete lack of new features, and a dearth of innovation–it’s just like Madden, except no one cares.

Enjoy?

(It’s a slow week.)
