Sony Playstation 3 Firmware Update 2.7.0 Coming This Month

by Danny InternetsMarch 8th, 2009 - 9:55 pm

Playstation 3 firmware update 2.7.0Psyonix Studios developer Corey David let the cat out of the bag this week regarding upcoming Playstation 3 firmware update 2.7.0. In discussing a bug with the studio’s game, Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars, David let slip in a forum post that the update is scheduled for release later this month.

Hey Guys -

I’ve been working with Sony trying to reproduce and solve the PSN sign-out issues some of you report.

Any info you can generate will be really helpful. Sony mentioned a bug they fixed with the next system software update (2.70) that might resolve these issues, but we have to narrow it down and verify it’s the same problem to be sure it’s that and not something we need to fix on our end.

IIRC it will drop later this month. And contain lots of fun new fixes. I’m excited about this one, lots of new stuff. :)

Though, I dont think I can mention any of them just yet.

It is not uncommon for developers to recieve advance copies of hardware updates so that they can ensure compatibility with their software. After the internet caught wind of the premature announcement the post was swiftly edited to remove any reference to the 2.7.0 release, further supporting the veracity of the statement.

So what exactly do we have to look for in 2.7.0? Last month, a member of the GameTrailers forums claiming to be a Sony R&D employee posted a list of new features supposedly coming with the firmware update. Neither confirmed nor denied at this point, the information sounds too good to be true yet just plausible enough to consider taking seriously.

Friends List:
- Voice Messaging is now available as an alternative to text after selecting a user on the friends list. Voice message recordings are capped at 30 seconds.
- Home Integration: Saved PlayStation Home avatar photos can be selected as photo ID for Gamer Card/Friends List.
- Trophy number and Gamer Level are listed under Friend names for quick reference.

Gamer Card & Trophies:
- Gamer Card layout has been changed to more closely resemble the PlayStation Store aesthetic.
- Past Trophy information can be viewed in detail by selecting “Recent Trophy History” option.
- Newly acquired trophies auto-sync in the background
- Server infrastructure for Trophies has been optimized. Resulting in faster retrieval time for Gamer Card and Trophy information.

In-Game XMB:
- Loading time for In-Game XMB has been drastically reduced, resulting in a more seamless in-game experience.
- “Theme settings” options while in-game is now available, allowing custom themes to be applied to the In-Game XMB.
- Internet Browser can now be accessed while in-game.
- Voice messaging and voice chat options can be used while in-game.
- Options that cannot be used in the XMB during game sessions are grayed out (but still selectable) to eliminate user accessibility confusion.

With loads of previously requested and novel high-quality features like these, Sony might finally be stepping up to the plate to give Microsoft a run for its money. Whether you’ve got a PS3, an Xbox 360, or both, industry competition always benefits the consumer. Three cheers for good news!

  4. do they have date like march 18 or wat

  5. this is OK but i have a SD card and i cant play videos on the ps3 from it

  6. we want to be able to play muisc while in a game like on the xbox 360 can this be put in the next update and to be able to play ps2 games on the 40 gb ps3 please

  7. Being able to play music while playing a game simultaneously is definitely one of my favorite features on my Xbox 360. It’s not even that I use it much, but just knowing that it’s there makes me feel all warm and gooey inside. Call me a feature-whore.

  8. @ nathan farish: i might be wrong, but i thought sony said from the release that only 60gb console could play PS2 games because they only put the chip it needs to read the discs in the 60gb. that can’t be fixed by an update. all about goin forward instead of backward.

  9. dont you think the ps3 has the software power / processing ability to emulate its ps2 counterpart tho?

i really fail to see the need for the chip at all… maybe im just thinking the ps3 is more powerful then it really is… i dont know…. but makes sense to me…

  10. From The Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. Developers at the conference were able to confirm that firmware v2.70 is coming this week. It just reached the hands of developers yesterday.

  11. okay xbox360 have netfix, what are you going to do about that. in also microsoft have the custom music? what are sony going to have custom music on not one,but everything,in games. microsoft have the market. can we see better improvement in the playstation stories. thats it. take care sony, with respect and love.

  12. I just saw that update myself on some other site about the update coming this week. I was going to mention it here, but I didn’t really have anything to add and didn’t want to linkjack it.

  13. To the people asking for in game music….it’s ALREADY there. It’s up to the game developers to add it in. Games like PixelJunk Monsters already have the ability to record video and upload it to Youtube. Games like Super Stardust HD and Warhawk already allow you to play custom music. It’s out of Sony’s hands now and up to the game developers themselves to code, and allow it in. The tools are there, but the game developers have to add it.

Not to be rude, but after a year it still boggles the mind that people demand features to be added when they already have been.

  14. anybody know wen it get out
its been a long time theyre talking but noting comes out

  15. Is this update out yet? holy *^&% its been forever since i heard about this. They said it would be out before or out on the 27th of march and i see nothing!!!

  17. Wow….. none of this is true…. the only thing we got was a stupid fricken text chat…. unless sony is tryin to pull some april fools joke, im really pissed.

  18. It just came out today I think 04/02/09, if you have broadband, you can go to the update via internet screen and download it now.

  19. THIS UPDATE IS BUGGY. After installing this update, I am no longer able to play any videos over the network. Searching around a bit, I have found that a lot of other people are reporting this problem. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

  20. Anyone who has used the 360’s custom track software is aware that it will allow playback through everything, menus, browsing the marketplace, changing settings and more obivious in-game. Now, using the PS3’s so-called in-game music feature I find it cannot even tread water. I understand that developers must code their games to support it. However, developers aren’t responsible for coding the XMB. Why when I’m listening to one of my bass heavy DnB tracks its cut just because I want to compare trophies or visit the playstation store?

Come on Sony… even the first Xbox had this basic stuff.
